Horrifying Blood Sucking Vampire Bats

Desmodus Rotundus commonly known as Vampire Bats are bats that depend on blood as their food source. Vampire bats are small mammals weighed about 28 grams that have upper incisor teeth shaped like canines which make a 7mm long and 8mm deep cut. Their teeth are designed amazingly for a special purpose to make an incision for removing blood painlessly which they consume about an average of 20-25 mL blood each day. Saliva of vampire bats contains a substance called draculin. Proven by scientists, its saliva are effective in keeping blood from clotting than any other medicines.

Vampire bats have small ears, short muzzle, and short tail membrane. They have no nose leaf instead having U-shaped grooves. Specialized thermo receptors are present on its nose which serves as a locator where the flow of the blood closes to the skin of its prey. Vampire bats are rabies-carrier but the risk of infection is less to human.

Most vampire bats live in colonies can be found in dark areas such as caves, eaves, buildings, old wells, and in hollow trees. Each vampire bat needs a blood meal at least once every few days but if a bat does not able to get blood meal it can contact another bat to induce a food. Exchanging of foods on their mouth is known as “Blood Transfusion”. They can live up to 9 years.
